Wherwell Singers are currently recruiting for new singers to join us from the Autumn.

Whether you’re a regular singer in another choir who wants to do more singing, or someone who hasn’t sung for a while, we’d love to hear from you. We’re particularly keen to hear from tenors and basses!

Who we are

We’re a friendly adult choir of 25 singers drawn from across the Test Valley who rehearse in Wherwell Church on Wednesday evenings. We give 2 or 3 concerts each year in North Hampshire and take up 1 or 2 invites a year to contribute to charity concerts and other events. We also have social events, after-concert parties (of course!) and an annual party.

The choir is a mix of singers – some sing in other choirs, some don’t. Some sight read, some don’t. What’s most important to us is a real passion for choral singing, a commitment to attending rehearsals and a commitment to keep raising our standard. Recently, we had a productive and fun workshop with Brian Kay, and in October we’ll be spending a day with internationally acclaimed vocal coach Hilary Llystyn-Jones.

What we sing

Our repertoire is mostly classical, both a capella and accompanied, and includes:

• Handel’s Messiah, Faure’s Requiem, Vivaldi’s Gloria and Vaughan Williams’ The First Noel

• English pastoral songs by Elgar, Ireland, Stanford and Vaughan Williams • 21st century anthems by Whitacre, Swingle, Todd, Lauridsen and Lukaszewski

• Russian Carols, carols by Britten, Mathias, Rutter, Grieg, Gardner, 21st century carols andTudor carols

• Plus, Bruckner, Byrd, Durufle, Monteverdi, Mozart, Parry, Poulenc, Tallis and many more!

Our plans for Autumn 2012

We have been invited to sing in Winchester Cathedral on November 17th and in Romsey Abbey on December 18th. Our Christmas concert will be on December 8th in Wherwell Church. The programme will include:

• Choruses from Bach’s Christmas Oratorio

• 21st century carols

• Carols by Tavener, Warlock, Rutter & Mathias

• Russian carols
